How Old Is Karen Weekly

Long earlier Karen Weekly became an All-American athlete, a lawyer, a professor and a busy higher softball autobus, she was a spirited child celebrating her fifth birthday.

"My parents had a little party with a bunch of picayune girls and i of them gave me a doll and I very inappropriately opened it and said, 'Oh, yuck, a doll,' " Weekly recalled. Before she became Tennessee's co-head coach, Karen Weekly was a lawyer and a professor.

Weekly's upbringing in Edmonds, Launder., shaped her personal and professional aspirations. She came from a progressive household that encouraged Weekly and her sisters to never let gender inhibit their aspirations.

Weekly's dream of condign a lawyer was fulfilled, but her love for sports kept pulling her back onto the softball diamond.

Having set bated her constabulary career, Weekly has teamed with her hubby, Ralph, to build the Tennessee plan into a national ability.

Tennessee (44-10) is making its 14th direct NCAA tournament appearance this flavor. The eighth-seeded Vols are regional hosts for the 13th straight season and begin play confronting Longwood (28-27) on Friday (Television: ESPN2. seven p.m. ET).

Karen's parents, Chuck and Ruthann Kvale, opened her imagination to limitless opportunities at a time when it wasn't always encouraged in order.

Laying down the law

Although she played softball and tennis, Karen's first dearest was basketball.

She grew upwards attending Seattle Supersonics games and idolizing Slick Watts, Freddie Brown and Jack Sikma.

When her family moved into a new house when Karen was 13, her father asked his daughters if they wanted a swimming pool or pickleball court in the lawn.

"Most kids would pick a swimming pool, but he said he could put a basketball hoop on one pole and a light on the other pole of the pickleball court and so we could play way afterwards dark," Karen said. "Nosotros said, 'Heck yeah. Nosotros've got to have a basketball court. We don't want a swimming pool.'"

Karen, who was a state Senate page in loftier schoolhouse, attended nearby Pacific Lutheran University, where she was a ii-sport star in basketball and softball from 1984-87. She was the softball programme's kickoff All-American and was inducted into the school's able-bodied Hall of Fame.

Ralph was the softball autobus at Pacific Lutheran, and Karen asked if she could return to help coach and run clinics when her schedule permitted.

Her coaching stint ended once she graduated from law school and took a job at a major police force firm in Seattle working on medical malpractice, environmental and employment defence cases.

Having started dating Ralph, Karen remained in touch with softball through his coaching. A month earlier they were married in 1994, Ralph was offered the caput coaching chore at Chattanooga.

"He said, 'What do you think? Do you lot desire to motility to Tennessee?' I said, 'Sure that sounds like fun. It sounds like an adventure to get married and move across the country and kind of first our married life just the 2 of us on our own,' " Karen said. Karen joined a law business firm in Chattanooga and reached out to the just other Washington constabulary graduate she could discover in the metropolis – a woman didactics business concern law at Chattanooga.

Although information technology was a gold opportunity, the move was bittersweet for Karen given she had to stop teaching police classes.

"Information technology was hard because it felt like I was giving upward a part of me and who I was and what I had worked so difficult for all those years," said Karen, who has a ane,021-340-ii career coaching record in 21 seasons. "The cool thing about me still doing something police-related was I had something completely my own and now I was completely venturing into Ralph's globe. All those years coaching it was me helping him out, but I still had my law matter. That was mine and I could go exercise that and he couldn't requite me his two cents most information technology. She keeps a black binder on her lap in the dugout each game labeled: "Karen'south Game Volume."

"It'south kind of funny because I saw that on film one twenty-four hour period and I said, 'Oh. That is kind of obnoxious,'" she said. "Only it's really simplistic and ho-hum actually."

Although Ralph greatly admired Karen's work as a lawyer and proudly touts her accomplishments whenever possible, he's glad to have her by his side total fourth dimension in softball.
